Over the past few months, we had been asking the UK workforce how commuting was affecting them, in the 2019 Office Space in Town (OSiT) 'Commuter Survey'. We wanted to know how the commute is impacting the day-to-day lives of employees, and what businesses can be doing to alleviate the stress of the commute, and ultimately boost employee wellbeing.

After a fantastic response with over 1,500 respondents stretching from all parts of the UK participating across a range of sectors, we now have the results.

Lengthy journeys were a common complaint for 43% of respondents, followed by overcrowding (27%) and frequent cancellations (26%) on public transport. Additionally, 43% noted that employer provisions which could alleviate the stress of commuting such as flexible or remote working and season ticket loans were not offered by their employer.

Given that 75% of those surveyed advised they take their commute into consideration when making decisions about their employment, there are clearly lots of things employees can do to make getting to work a more pleasant and less stressful experience, and in the process help to improve staff recruitment and retention.

You can now view the full findings of the survey and download our 'Commuter Survey' brochure here, which also provides a handbook for employers on the key things they can be doing to help support workers alleviate the stress of the journey to work.

We'd also like to congratulate our survey winner, Rop Cronshaw - we hope you enjoyed your John Lewis voucher and bottle of champagne!
