In an era where work dynamics have transcended the traditional office space, prioritising the welfare of our workforce is imperative. Employers are increasingly acknowledging that employee well-being is not just a desirable aspect but an essential foundation for a thriving and sustainable business environment. However, this heightened awareness doesn’t always translate into tangible results felt by employees.
The corporate landscape is undergoing a significant shift, and the debate surrounding flexible business models is more relevant than ever. The rise of hybrid working is reshaping the way we work and the way businesses operate. With some 76% of employees considering a flexible approach a core perk in new roles.
It seems that the days of employees enjoying - or loathing - their entirely remote work environments are coming to an end, with scores of world-leading companies recently announcing return-to-work mandates.
Earlier this year, British banking giant Lloyds announced it was considering a downsizing of its Cardiff offices. Vehicle leasing leader MotoNovo Finance, one of Cardiff’s biggest employers, is rumoured to be considering such a move too.

This July marks a year since Niki and Giles Fuchs, the founders of Office Space in Town (OSiT), announced they were taking a step back from the day-to-day business and that Simon Eastlake would take over as the new managing director.
The business has come a long way since the siblings opened the first OSiT flexible workspace centre in a 25,000 sq ft building at Euston Tower in London back in 2009. Today, the company operates circa 250,000 sq ft of space across eight sites in London, Cardiff and Edinburgh and is one of the UK’s leading flexible workspace providers.
As Cardiff’s workforce returned to their masses, the office market recorded a year-over-year increase of more than 80% in 2022, its best take-up since 2018.[1]
But if the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that situations can change drastically overnight. Covid-19 may be behind us, but there are many challenges ahead and businesses must take steps to protect against future disruption. The solution lies in flexible workspaces — a growing trend that Cardiff has been quick to embrace.
HSBC’s move to the former BT office in St Paul’s could be considered a death knell for the economic hub of Canary Wharf – at least if you believe some commentators. The true story, however, is much more positive. As businesses undergo a shift in terms of location and priorities, they find themselves with some extremely exciting opportunities – if they’re willing to adapt.
Various studies estimate that 15-20% of the world’s population is neurodiverse, with conditions including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia and dyspraxia, among others. But despite neurodiverse conditions being so common, the workplace can be a difficult space for neurodiverse employees to navigate.
While workspaces are changing, this fluctuation by no means signals a decline in the London office sector; quite the opposite, when we consider the recent flurry of refurbs across the capital.

The recent comment from Jeremy Hunt that office work should once again be the “default” for employees is the latest stroke in an ongoing battle between in-person and home working. What is different here is that Hunt speaks not as an employer or an employee, with a personal stake in the matter, but instead as Britain’s Chancellor speaking on behalf the UK’s economic wellbeing.
A proposal of new legislation was announced late last year giving workers in the UK the right to ask for flexible working from the first day of a new job. Aimed at supporting employees who have personal commitments such as caring for children or vulnerable adults, the raft of new measures looks to give employees more control over their working options.
The current discourse on the future of work has been invigorated by results of the recent experiment of a four-day work week. The trend towards flexible working hours is rightly gaining momentum, but as it does, it remains crucial for businesses to strike a delicate balance between accommodating employees’ needs for greater freedom and ensuring that flexibility does not come at the cost of worker wellbeing or productivity.
